Why the Fury Road universe is set in Australia

Post by Uncle Entity »

Well, just few reasons:

1- Max has an Australian accent sometimes slipping into British. We can pretend the new Max has English parents. But he's clearly Australian.

2- Some cars (most?) are left-handed.

3- Some slang used. "Smeg", "Guzzoline" and so on.

4- The salt plans. No dried up ocean. The Australian outback is full of salt plans. The 160 days is a debatable point. Furiosa just told Max she had fuel and resources for 160 days of travelling. Max was being metaphorical when he mentioned the "160 days" thing. He meant: "there's nothing out there".

5- At a certain point, you can see Immortan Joe chanting an aboriginal song of some sort.

6- In his flashbacks, Max sees an old aborigine he couldn't save.

7- Some of the People Eaters are addressed as "Koalas". In the Italian dubbing, at least.

8- Immortan Joe is cleary Australian. As well as some other characters. Played by Australian actors...

9- You can pretend the Buzzards (Russians), Furiosa and her clan (Africans?) and some other foreign elements found themselves in Australia because before the War there had been a massive immigration to Australia. Remember, alternate history.

No doubt about it.

The "Give Way" sign as a shield on the bloke in the final chase is another, 'sign', that it is in Australia.

The badges on the dash of the Gigahorse too from memory. Falcon, Torana etc...

I want to watch it again!

yes and no. the plains of silence are part of a dried up sea bed as the video game will be going into. so if it is australia it would have to be closer to the shores then anything cause the video game coming out this september is part cannon and all written by George Miller. but also two Mad max has the accents and the cars but if you've read with miller he makes it very clear that the place in the world in which it takes place is ambigious and it so for a reason. Miller has made it clear that it's not really ment to be anywhere but everywhere.

so yes it has ear marks of being Australian but that is not the intent of Miller as far as the way his universe is set and works making it ulitmately moot.

Immortan Joe is played by Hugh Keays-Byrne, a British Indian actor who has lived in Australia since he was 26.
