What if FR retcons BT out of existence? (funny theory)
Re: What if FR retcons BT out of existence? (funny theory)
Miller a lot of times always spoke about how the Wasteland was "reimagined" while Max was the same. He wasn't rebooting/reimagining the character.
Again, it says right there in the official companion/art book from the scriptwriters that if you had to place Fury Road in a timeline it would be a while after Thunderdome. We all know Miller didn't stick to continuity, and he shouldn't have, and the other films were treated as separate entities or episodes with Max and the car being the only constant between them except for Thunderdome of course due to the lack of the Interceptor. That's what was perfect about Fury Road, it is it's own thing but there's a few nods and clues with Max and his gear linking him to the past films despite a change in actor.

I see now that I have said it is a reboot. I admit it. But if you read this post of mine I quoted below, you can see I don't mean by reboot, retelling the same story completely from the beginning. Just another case of bad choice of words. Remember I'm not native English. I even had to look up the difference between 're imaging' that I used and 're imagining' what others used. Those are words that are not often used in daily speech. So, in a case like this, I have a hard time finding the exact words to describe my thoughts and have to do it with the words I know that fits best. And by the time the discussion progresses, I read other descriptions that I have to look up and discover to be more accurate to describe my thoughtsKnightrider wrote:It has a loose continuity for sure, but if you are willing to fill in the gaps and connect the dots, it is not impossible that this story is part of the same story we all know and love, why is that a bad thing for some?

In this storyline the events of MM1 are a bit different from the original one. In this storyline the Toecutter gang kills his wife and teenage daughter. The rest is practically the same. That's why we see the bulging eyes of the Toecutter like in the original MM1 storyline.
In the original storyline, after 2 years, MM2 happens. He has his car modified and the engine is still in pretty good condition. This is where the interceptor get destroyed. That is the end of the interceptor.
In this new time line, Max modifies his car, but slightly different from how we know it from MM2. Many years go by and his car gets worse and worse. New tires are hard to get and has to stuff the old worn ones with rags and stuff to keep them 'inflated'.
The engine has seen its best time and now has completely worn piston rings and valve seals. Black smoke when starting and maybe just slightly more than half of the original horsepower left. That's why he has trouble outrunning the warboys in the beginning of FR. Car gets rolled and fixed up by the warboys and heavily modified. Eventually it got destroyed for good between the two tankers with Slitt driving it.
That is my view of the difference between the two time lines.
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

This movie is a new "CHAPTER ONE" of a new continuity of the Mad Max character.
At the beginning of the movie, we see that Max II is a burned out, desolate man, living like a scavenger and - WORST of all - a living zombie with no feelings or emotions or goals. Actually, he looks scary. PTSD, long hair, long beard, dead eyes.
We can assume New Max/Max 2 has been living this way for years - ten years by sure - and never helped other human beings. "The Road Warrior" and "Thunderdome" never occurred in this line. Without counting the fact Max II has different parents, different DNA and his behaviour is very different from the original Max's.
I absolutely loved that he rediscovers his humanity and - step by step - regains his TRUE identity as "Mad Max": reluctant hero and protector. His story arc is by far the coolest factor in this masterpiece.

We shall wait until the comics come out to sort out the timeline issue.
As it now stands, based just on covers of the comics, Fury Road story line definitely acknowledges the existence of Mad Max 1 and 2.
There's Toecutter and MFP cars on there, with MACK tanker from MM2 and most importantly both MM1 BoB and dual-tank MM2 interceptor.
The whole reimagining/revisiting talk was delivered prior to the release and slightly smells of studio influence.
- Hey I want to do a Mad Max sequel!
-Must not be a sequel, look at Superman and Indy, we must pull Batman Begins, or no money for you!!!
- OK, it's a reimagining then. [goes and does his own thing as always]

The comic books messed up things so badly... but to me they are not canon, sorry.MachRider wrote:

he talks about how the stories of the comics were developed during the writing of FR, he sure seems proud of them, his name is on them right at the top of the list of creators. When you say that "they are not cannon, sorry" you sound like a disgruntled Star Wars fan

My theories are based on the movies. Just that. I try to make sense out of them. The movies and what I watch on-screen.
Quite frankly, it seems to me VERY FORCED to make the Fury Road universe fit with the original trilogy, whose continuity is perfect the way it is.
Fury Road is a new universe, and perfect the way it is.
The creature goes beyond the creator.he talks about how the stories of the comics were developed during the writing of FR, he sure seems proud of them, his name is on them right at the top of the list of creators. And it's not the very first time Miller plays with the mind of the fans.
