The article itself is a pretty damn good read also. It's funny that the shot with the guitar and steering wheel near the end i would have thought was just added cg but they were actually filmed practically and then added.

Sure the cars were real but this movie could not have been made without the CG to put it all together. The scenes where Max is hanging upside down while Furiosa is holding him and when he is hanging from the pole were both filmed on stationary vehicles.
Composites aren't CG though.

They filmed real elements and mixed them together. Again the Citadel and Toxic Storm were the only CG parts done.

most people don't really know and it can be confusing. a lot of what's done in this film is the same as what was done in Star Wars and Ben Hur and thousands of other films only now done on computer rather than painting on glass.

The terms don't matter. All that matters is if the film is immersive and any non-physical elements seamless.

CGI and green screening have become dirty words but Fury Road has proven how immersive they can be when combined with physical action. Just as Jurassic Park proved that rendered images could work with animatronic models.

I haven't read any comments from people saying "Hey that canyon looked superimposed" or "The vehicles clearly aren't moving". That's when post production effects work, when you're surprised to find out they were ever there.

Sadly Fury Road did set the bar a fraction too high in places but it's a movie that's absolutely pushing the envelope of what can be done.

By that logic The Phantom Menace wasn't a CG movie either. Most of what you saw was model work composited with digital backgrounds. The only major CG elements in the movie were the creatures like Jar Jar and the battle droids. Most people don't even know this.

But I don't know how you can look at shots like this and tell me this isn't a CG movie:

I've seen Miller say multiple times "this wasn't a green screen movie" so I wonder how he explains scenes like this.

The problem isn't that they used CG. The problem is that they keep telling us they didn't.
Easy, it was filmed with real vehicles with with actors. Just because they added background and made the stationary vehicle move using CG doesn't mean shit. What people get shitty about is if the only thing in the shot that was real is say the actor and everything else around them is CG. Doing this scene is no different to the way they did them in the other MM films.
