How Does Furiosa's Arm Actually Work??

Post by scfc68 »

In terms of the movie, I saw the fingers moving, so does it pick up the nerve impulses from her stump and then transfer them into signals to move it??

Have a careful look at freezeframes. It's unexplained but auto mechanical, there's a pullstarter and a twostroke cylinder head and some glimpses of fuel lines and maybe a fuel tank to power/charge it so perhaps it's supposed to have some hydraulic or pneumatic pressure accumulator that gets charged up for a few minutes a day to power rams and pistons to drive the fingers.

On page 52 of the art of book there is a concept art drawing explaining it. It is powered by a small petrol engine.
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

It's an artifact from the pre-apocalypse world, of course, which is not the same pre-apocalypse world of "Mad Max 1". 8-)

you know I was actually thinking that myself. I mean this isn't technology from the look of it so it's hard to understand how the mechanism of control would actually work and to be honest it's kept me up at night as I try to figure out the best way for it work given what we see of it's contstuction.

You cannot. It's a future thing. Pre-war.

I did not think it was that hi tech at all. I got the impression the arm was supposed to be a piece of junk because it kept falling off, the thing runs on gasoline like it was built from an old chainsaw motor or something. Probably cobbled together in Joe's garages with the same tech that put together all of those crazy vehicles.

there is the question of how the finger work that does seems hi tech, but that might just be a simple open/close hydraulic mechanism that operates by twisting her arm a certain way or flexing muscles. To me the whole thing looks like it was made from scrap.

Her arm is merely a movie prop that looks cool , it would not function in real life so not really worth trying to figure out how it works , it is obviously post war " home made " with bits and pieces like the spanner etc
Real bionic arms work by detecting electrical impulses when the arm muscles contract and look more robotic like C3P0 , they run on lithium batteries
Furiousa's arm looks totally impractical with the big claw , you wouldn't be able to eat your cornflakes with it lol , again it's just made to look cool
I don't recall seeing it fall off in the movie , she takes it off a lot which suggests that it is heavy and uncomfortable

here is good pic you can see a wrench or spanner, lots of electrical tape, and what appear to be car parts, gauges, carburetor linkage, and engine hoses, the fingers are somehow spring operated. The thumb is half of a vice grip wrench. I think their is a gas tank on the shoulder pad and a small motor in the wrist area.
