Yeah it was discussed here:

Guess it's just one of those things.

Would have a pisser if just over the next dune was an oasis, with a thriving trading community and river barges running to the sea :-)

thanks Max!

I just watched the movie for a fifth time. listening to the dialogue carefully, what is actually said is: "if we leave the tanker here, and load up the motorcycles, we can ride for 160 days." It is never specifically said that it is a hundred sixty days ride across the salt. In fact, it is clear that they have no idea what is out there. Later, Max says: "Even if you ride for a hundred sixty days, all you're going to find is salt." He is speaking metaphorically, meaning that there is nothing out there for them, not that the salt extends for 160 days.

It's an ocean bed :-) But even if you do find fresh water, there is no civilisation. Nux could have fathered the required children to build up a clan, but as he is half-life, chances are that his genes were mutated and good offspring would be rare.

Yes, he points across the salt, but what he means is that by turning back and making a run for the Citadel she may find the redemption she desires. Whereas riding for 160 days in the direction he points, stating there is nothing but salt, is metaphorically referring to the fact that there is no future and no redemption in that direction. He's making a point.

Maybe he was pointing in the direction of Europe. But even in the present time there is no future and no redemption at this god forsaken place :? No thanks to our governments and Brussels.

But 'to ride 160 days' is not that absurd. If the oceans are dried up, the ocean floors are far from flat. There will be just a few places where you could get up to speed. But most of the time you are going slow over rough terrain and avoiding obstacles.
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

If he hadn't specifically said "salt" it would be a lot easier to see it as a metaphor.

Oceans being dried up, I think we can dismiss that one if we want to remain even remotely in the realm of possibility. The water would of course have to go somewhere, it would alter the makeup of air, chemically re-arrange so many things.... well we could go on forever about possible effects but I think we can assume no life as we know it would remain, not even plants as they are now, and certainly not humans. I don't wanna say no life at all could survive because we know of things like extremophiles, but it would be so different it would be like another planet with an entirely different ecosystem and lifeforms.

And really everything I said doesn't matter anyway because of this :). But I guess the point is to engage us and have some fun.

If Fury Road does well enough hopefully we'll get some good jokes like that in the next big spoof movie :).
