Fury Road Screening Discussion (WARNING! HEAVY SPOILERS!)

After watching BT in the 1980's as a kid on old VHS I am now 37 years old and have been waiting nearly 30 years for this film.

Watched it at Hereford, UK this afternoon for first time.

This for me was road warrior/thunderdome on steroids, it does seem like George took the road theme from RW plus the 'living high up on a rock with water, fruit, veg food" from BT
spliced them together added $150 million with a bit of salt and pepper, and created this monstor.

Nothing I would have added to the film nothing ..- if anything would have taken away

It was like a perfect cake but I would have taken off a bit of icing.

1) No need for flash computer CGI in front of camera close ups of objects (steering wheel, flares) - raw mechanics without affects are fine

2) Tom hardy wonderful physical actor performance great! but again take away his spoken parts not needed his action does all the talking.

3) moments that gave me goose bumps - cinematography that shook my senses
The moonlit / night scenes just f*cking superb , and we had not seen that type of night scene before in a madmax film.
The sand dune furiosa
The bullet farmer not being able to see moment

Nice touches the Aussie actors so so pleased ..was expecting American accents when I heard the film was being made.

Furiosa should be called Maxine
And the film Mad Maxine Good God a strong woman turns me on And to give Charlize Theron credit she was stunning. (She is actually south african by birth so maybe filming in Africa was more natural to her)

Regarding the Feminist comments about the film, it shows men and women in a strong role so is equal as far as I can see, I thought it was just a great film whole crew did good job.

Note* Ok was daytime viewing, but a lot of the people in the Cinema seemed to be 40 or 50+ not many younger people

In that case I'll drop the Aboriginal thought.
I'll have to hear it again, but it didn't sound like Russian to me. And I've heard that a lot in movies and colleagues

Just got back from my second screening. This time I was prepared and knew when the foreign language came. this time I listened very closely to it, and must admit it sounds Russian. 1 or 2 words I even recognized this time.

Oh and they missed a trick Bruce Spence could have been the bullet farmer.

That, indeed, could have been a good choice. But the actor Richard Carter pulls it off very nicely.

And I saw the nipple twisting of the People Eater this time. He does it right before they get in the cars to chase them again. But guess what. The Dutch subs are covering it up mostly

Haven't posted in ages... Been lurking in the wasteland awaiting Fury road though.

Gotta say, I LOVED IT!!! It will be hard to ever beat the orignals & mel as max however I thought it was fantastic.

I went to a second screening today too. It sounded Russian, but I don't speak Russian so its just a guess.

There is only a few words, maybe its a made up language that just sounds a little Russian.

Saw if for the second time yesterday. After my slight disappointment the first time, I would happily admit that I liked it more on my second viewing. It's a really good film and the fact that it's so packed with detail really lends itself to repeat viewings.

Certain things that bothered me the first time I enjoyed a lot more this time around, for example the flashback scenes and music score I thought far more highly of when I saw it again. Some of my problems with it the first time probably stemmed from my own perfect idea of what a Mad Max film is (i.e. MM2) and unfairly comparing this to it. Judged on its own merits it's often excellent.

However on the other hand, certain things still irritated me on this viewing - the muffled dialogue; the lack of time for the film to just breathe; the rushed, odd feeling of the last few shots of the film (think these were almost certainly shot at a later stage to most of the film and felt slightly off in look); the dreadful needless CGI shot when the War Rig crashes.

Overall I'd probably go along with what Mark Kermode essentially said - it was definitely good, although possibly not the groundbreaking masterpiece most seem to be calling it. However, if someone had said to me a year ago that it would be this good, it would still have been beyond all my most optimistic expectations.

I'd rate it 8/10 (having thought 7 the first time).

I like your honest review and agree with all your points above. You really nailed it: It IS UNFAIR to compare to MM2 for so many reasons, serendipity being one of them. I did have a hard time with the dialogue, which is why I need to see this with CC(in Blu Ray of course). The last few shots and the CGI didn't really bother me, I didn't really even notice.

My overall feeling is that George Miller did a great job reintroducing a long, lost franchise back into the mainstream. He knew he couldn't make Avengers/transformers/F&F type of money but he certainly set Mad Max up for at least one, if not more, sequels. Yes, the move ranks a 7 or 8 for us
old timers but it ranks a 9 or 10 if you're looking at today's comic book/action crap market.

I think its doing well moneywise? Forbes magazine says we are at 45m dollars so far in the US and the worldwide total is 105m dollars up to now. Pretty good at just a week in. It should be making the money back it cost fairly soon at that rate,even allowing for dropping off. I still plan to see it at least once more in 2D, I know plenty others who are as well. I think money won't be an issue, more like a lot has to come together to get a sequel made, Hardy is in demand so it may be a while yet. Does Miller want to do another film before another MM movie??

Wouldn't it be great to see George Miller given a crack at a Star Wars movie??
