I'm fully confident in all the actors (male or female) that they will be good in Fury Road. I don't think just because a movie has strong focus on a female lead makes it a feminist movie by default. Women usually are the last survivors in horror movies...would you call Halloween or Friday the 13th movies feminist? I think not.

I will say it's nice to have a female action star who looks believable and could hold her own compared to some recent action movies. I mean Charlize looks buff as hell given how she usually looks.

There's been this huge push in the industry for strong female leads (which of course doesn't mean physically strong) but most roles are just playing lip service to it. Fury Road is really looking like the real deal.

The Gamergate stuff is just embarrassing and shameful.

At 35 I was so fortunate to grow up with the movies I watched. The Warrior Woman in RoadWarrior was a perfect example of integrating female characters in a totally matter of fact manner, she isn't sexualized, she isn't there for Max to have a love interest, she doesn't have to be cool and cocky. That would be considered progressive now. And Jessie was pretty strong and multidimensional in Mad Max, there was an enormous sense of character with her. Thunderdome had it in spades of course. Like Cameron, Miller has shone as someone who does his female characters justice.

The whole collusion of game journalists along with indie devs is pretty shameful. Especially when hiding behind an ideology of "social justice" that hasn't actually helped anybody except boosting their own egos and fattening their wallets while making other developers terrified to make the games they want or speak up for fear of being blacklisted at award ceremonies. Death threats to female developers on Twitter? Bah. The FBI just determined all of them were hoaxes. Gamergate helped expose the fact most vocal progressives are the very bullies they claim to be working against. They are desperate for attention.

Really, I'd love to hear a well thought out explanation of the perceived drought of strong female leads, because I'm not experiencing it. Sticking with movies, in recent years we've had Kill Bill 1 and 2, the numerous Resident Evil movies, the Matrix trilogy, the Hunger Games series, Doomsday, Edge of Tomorrow, and that's just off the top of my head from one genre. Maybe the argument should be "I'm afraid of men".

I will say I'm very happy that Charlize Theron is the female lead in Fury Road. She looks fantastic for the role in every way. It's impossible to forget how truly awful Prometheus was but I don't blame Charlize, an actor cannot work with bad material.

I like Prometheus a lot. I'm also a fan of the Alien movies. Sigourney Weaver is really badass in this franchise. What a woman But I'm not that fond of Theron. I like Noomi Rapace more than Theron. But I have seen Noomi in more film than Charlize an must say that I prefer Noomi over Charlize in looks and personality.

My favourite Charlize Theron film is Young Adult, she's brilliant in it. She's also amazing in her role in Snow White And The Huntsman.

There's just something about Sigourney Weaver though. Closest I've seen to her presence on screen is Taylor Schilling.

this movie is kinda starting to piss me off....with all the clips showing Max as some weak EMO....and the Girl in reversal roles as playing the tough Max Character....its like someone is forcing George to make a feminist version of Max.

I actually agree with the sentiment but mine certainly isn't directed against Theron; she's a good actress and she looks believable as a warrior trying to do something good in their life against a backdrop of chaos (how many females get to play a role like that!).

However, there is something about Hardy as Max that concerns - though I can't wait for the film. He looks sullen and looks to spend the first act getting captured - and by the looks of the new trailer - twice and then only freed by accident (no picking of locks by the looks?). This isn't exactly a great record for a hero who many won't have seen before. Narratively, there's a clear difference between Gibson's proactive, skilled driver choosing to have himself captured or refusing to be part of some immoral plan and Hardy's tired looking warrior stumbling around the wasteland getting captured.

My conclusion is that Theron's character is in fact the hero and Max plays a secondary protagonist role along with Nux. I guess the comparison would be if you imagine Pappagallo driving the truck and finding the truck; it changes the dynamics somewhat and I can't imagine rooting for Pappagallo too much. Theron's character looks a lot more interesting tbf. I don't see much comparison between Theron and the original character of Max however.
