Mad Max shooter shows no remorse, Highway victim living in fear
A West Australian driver who shot at another motorist in a Mad Max-type road rage attack will spend at least eight years behind bars.
Michael Craig Anderson repeatedly shot at his terrified victim following a high-speed pursuit on an isolated South Australian highway.
Anderson, a former army mechanic and TAFE lecturer, was found guilty of attempted murder of Zephatali Walsh, then 26, on the Eyre Highway between Kimba and Iron Knob in July 2013.
In the Supreme Court on Monday, Justice John Sulman jailed the 54-year-old Perth man for 14 years with a non-parole period of eight years, noting his victim continued to suffer - having had to deal with comments likening his ordeal to the movie Mad Max and to the wild west.
The court heard how Walsh is now a recluse who constantly relives being shot at.
"He genuinely believed he was going to die," the judge said.
During the lengthy pursuit, Anderson fired five shots from his .357 Smith and Wesson Magnum revolver, one of which hit Mr Walsh's petrol tank.
"You have very little tolerance for drivers you perceive to be driving badly," the judge said
Mr Walsh told the jury of accelerating to 180km/h in a desperate bid to escape Anderson, who had tailgated and collided with his car, before firing shots at him.
In triple-zero calls, the terrified victim says, "Oh my God, this guy is shooting at me", "I need help, I need help", and "I am really scared".
Anderson told the jury he had just wanted to scare the other driver away, firing his "hand cannon" or "big scary gun" down at the roadway.
He also described Mr Walsh as a "creep" who had ruined his perfect holiday and "then rings up triple-zero like a baby".
The judge rejected a claim that the incident was out of character for Anderson, instead accepting evidence from his ex-wife about previous times when he became angry and aggressive towards other drivers.
Mr Walsh still cannot drive on the highway, has nightmares, had to give up his university studies and "hated and pitied the person I became".
"I am still a hermit, broke, distract myself with the computer and smoke too much," he said.
His mother told the court her son had changed from being outgoing, happy and adventurous to hiding away and living in fear.

It was a fad here in the States for a while, I think in the 1990s, pulling out guns and shooting at other drivers who pissed you off. It seems to have gone away. One of our more stupid trends, like wearing your pants pulled down under your rear. That one doesn't seem to be going away though.
