Those rounds were older type made from paper. Paper-hulled shells are not very abuse friendly. They will absorb moisture and swell up, making them hard to chamber. They get bent out of shape easily. The rounds Max took off the corpse were very dry-rotted which is why the one crumbled. You then saw him checking the integrity of the other by squeezing it. When he touched it off at the Humungous, it hang-fired and the main charge didn't ignite properly, what is called a 'squib-load'. Smokeless gun powder needs a hot ignition source and compression to work.
