It can't. The movie's a reboot. Even Miller's said that much. Just watch Mad Max and then go see FR after it for the 'new' timeline. The guy editing the article hasn't seen the movie. Even if we go with the idea Max found a new Interceptor/repaired the old one, I understand the reviewer's problem with Hardy's age creating a problem. I can't go into spoilers but the world we see here and specifically something Furiosa says about her childhood doesn't add up with Max's age or the timeline of the previous movies. Would have made sense with Mel in the part because of his age. Also, yes Hardy's older than Mel was when he filmed Thunderdome but Max was meant to be what- 15/20 years older than RW in Thunderdome…? FR would make more sense set another 15/20 years after that, in my opinion.

By virtue of the fact that it doesn't have a boot spoiler indicates that it isn't the same car.
Do you not think that with the police force there might of been several models of Pursuit Specials? Too many miss the key element of the Mechanics line in MM2 "last OF THE V8 Interceptors" and Berry's line "she's the last OF THE V8s" and "a piece from here and a piece from there." Neither of them say "the last V8" they use the term "of the V8s" clearly implying that V8s and V8 Interceptors refers to Pursuit Specials not just the BoB. Even more so when combined with the line "that's what hurts. It's one of our V8s. Pursuit Special on methane."

Since we have seen the Falcon versions of police Interceptors, both an XA and XB sedan, as well as an XB sedan version of the Pursuit. We also saw the Monaro version of the Pursuit Special with flares, boot spoiler, and hood scoop one could safely imply that the BoB is the Falcon coupe version of the Pursuit Special with distinct additions; spoilers, flares, nose cone, etc. These design elements could have been developed by the MFP branch or industry with certain costs, much the same way that police cars are designed and developed now and the Falcon coupe Pursuit Special could have been the last one off the line with very few developed because of the cost and changing economic situation. So the line "last OF THE V8s" could clearly mean the last design not just the very last individual, no more, BoB.
Just my 2 cents

Sorry but all this is academic, given the fact that it isn't meant to fit neatly into the other films; it's a reimagining of road warrior kind of. It's basically a reboot but without origins.

For all we know, that BOB could be his own car and nothing to do with a police force. It's just a car in this movie and gets destroyed pretty quick. That's what I've heard.

I think the black car is in the movie just because G. Miller knows how emblematic it is for everybody. I mean for the common people, not only for the hardcore fans. For everybody, this is the same car. People don't give a shit about spoilers...
I'm a little disapointed because this is a pure reboot, starting a new movie out of the legend, out of what is Mad Max for the people. And for the people, Mad Max doesn't have nothing to do with the Yu Yangs or Little River. This is about crazy guys, crazy cars and big chase. Miller just wanted to make a new and cool story with that.

Now, the only interesting thing, for me, is what was in the 2002 Fury Road that is not in this 2015 version ? What's the differences ? Was the 2002 Fury Road a true sequel ? Max was supposed to die at the begining, then there was his son's revenge... How all of this fit together...

I'm actually very curious too as to what the original story for 2002 Fury Road was, because I think it was supposed to be a direct sequel to MMBT, with Mel in it (I don't see the point of making a reboot with the same actor playing the main role, but who knows, Miller is known for confusing people with acting choices in Mad Max movies).

BTW, does anyone remember what year this pic was taken? This seems to be the first picture of Max's Interceptor from Fury Road but I don't remember if it was supposed to be in the 2002 version or 2015.

Taipan, IIRC, it was taken in 2002 as a bid to build the cars for the planned Namibian shoot then and is still the same Interceptor that was shipped to Broken Hill and then shipped back to Namibia in 2012 and the very one we finally see in the movie and thus far the trailer.

With 2 tanks in the boot, that car fits in the timeline of the original trilogy. But how it was to be used I can't even hazard a guess. Makes no sense in a movie set years after Thunderdome.

Assuming 2002 Fury Road was supposed to be a sequel then maybe this car would've been used for flashback sequences. Or maybe it was supposed to be the real 'other V8 Inteceptor'. But yeah, that would be a real stretch.

Yes I tend to agree, considering how new/clean the Interceptor looks and if Mel was involved it had to be a sequel then it must of been a flashback.

Recent interview with George Miller : Question: Is Tom Hardy playing the same Mad Max, or is it a completely different and new Mad Max?

GEORGE MILLER: Yes and no. Yes, of course, it’s based on the same character that Mel [Gibson] played. He’s the lone warrior in the wasteland, basically disengaged from the rest of the world. But naturally, Tom brings his Tom Hardy-ness to it. He brings another quality. And the character is different, to some degree, because the story is different. So, it’s a yes and no answer. Yes, it’s different, but no, he’s essentially grown out of the same material.

Have you specified how many years after Beyond Thunderdome this might be?

MILLER: I keep asking the question, and I’ve got it down to between 45 and 50 years from next Wednesday, or the next Wednesday from the day that you watch the movie.

========================================

This movie isnt a sequel.... its a reboot, a "re-imagining"

Stop thinking about trying to add it to a time line because it wont fit.
We are 100% snafu....
